OSGE selected to the Project Phoenix by the U.S. Department of State
09/11/2023, 16:14OSGE has been awarded in the strategic Project Phoenix and will receive funding from the U.S. Department of State to accelerate SMR project in Poland. The official launch of the project takes place today in Bratislava.
Funding for OSGE has been granted under the Project Phoenix. The U.S. Department of State program is aimed at supporting the energy transition process in Central Europe, specifically the construction of small modular reactors in place of coal-fired power plants. The selection of the beneficiaries was announced this September at the Three Seas Initiative (3SI) in Bucharest by John Kerry, the U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate. Today, the official launch of the program is taking place in the Slovak capital. Alongside OSGE, support will be provided to entities from Slovakia and Romania: Slovenske Elektrarne and Nuclearelectrica.
The launch event in Bratislava is attended by members of governments from the U.S., Poland, Slovakia and Romania. In addition, representatives of the U.S. nuclear industry are present, including SMR technology suppliers, as well as potential investors. OSGE was represented by CEO Rafał Kasprów, who, among other things, participated in the opening panel of the meeting titled “Awarded in the Phoenix Project: Feasibility Study Plans and Potential for SMRs”.
“We see OSGE’s selection to the strategic program led by the U.S. Department of State as a recognition of the advanced stage of our project and an acknowledgement of the potential to build a fleet of SMR reactors in Poland. Being part of Project Phoenix can greatly accelerate our efforts, not just through collaboration with the U.S. government, but also by working with experienced experts and top U.S. nuclear energy sector companies which will be involved in the Project Phoenix”, said Rafał Kasprów, CEO of OSGE.
The SMR technology that OSGE plans to deploy in Poland is the BWRX-300 developed by the U.S. company GE-Hitachi Nuclear Energy. OSGE has exclusive rights to use the technology in Poland.
Project Phoenix is a U.S. government initiative aimed at supporting Europe’s transition from fossil fuel-based power generation to SMR reactors. The program provides financial support from the U.S. government for preparing feasibility studies for selected SMR technologies. Funding can also support initiatives aimed at improving energy security of Central and Eastern European countries.
