OSGE to sign the declaration on tripling global nuclear power capacity

OSGE is part of an initiative to triple global nuclear capacity by 2050. During the CERAWeek energy conference in Houston, USA, companies such as Amazon, Google, and Meta also joined the pledge. Tech giants point to the need to secure a stable supply of clean energy for the development of AI technology and data centers.

The scale of this initiative can be best illustrated by the fact, that that the total capitalization of the signatory companies significantly exceeds Poland’s GDP. OSGE, a joint venture between PKN ORLEN and Synthos Green Energy, plays a key role in the transformation of the Polish energy sector through the implementation of small modular reactor (SMR) technology.

Tech giants including Amazon Web Services (AWS), Meta, and Google, which are participating in the initiative, are focusing on the development of SMR technology as a key element of their energy strategy. OSGE, with its programme of deployment of a fleet of BWRX-300 reactors from the U.S. company GE Hitachi, fits perfectly into this trend.

The pledge says that “despite ongoing energy efficiency and optimisation efforts, energy demand in many industries is expected to increase significantly in the coming years in order to support growing economies” and the signatories “agree that nuclear energy capacity should at least triple by 2050, from current levels, to help achieve global goals for enhanced energy resiliency and security, and continuous firm clean energy supply”.

The announcement follows earlier pledges by 31 countries (including Poland), by 140 nuclear industry companies and 14 major global banks and financial institutions to support the tripling goal. The pledge is expected to gain more support in the coming months from industries including maritime, aviation and oil and gas. It has been facilitated by the World Nuclear Association (WNA).

– OSGE has become a recognized partner for the largest global tech companies seeking stable and zero-emission energy sources. Our presence at CERAWeek in Houston is not only the result of the pledge, but above all of the discussions we have here with global AI and data centre players. From this perspective, it is clear to me that if Poland wants to participate in the tech revolution, it must focus on building a fleet of BWRX-300s, because there is no other answer to the energy demand from players such as Amazon, Google, and Meta – said Rafał Kasprów, CEO of OSGE.
