OSGE SIGNS AGREEMENTS WITH CANADIAN AECON AND ATKINSREALIS
28/06/2024, 15:00OSGE signs cooperation agreements with Aecon and AtkinsRéalis – partners delivering the world’s first BWRX-300 in Canada, and Teaming Agreement with Aecon, AtkinsRéalis and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy.
Polish Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), Canadian Aeconand AtkinsRéalis, and GE Vernova’s Nuclear business – GE Hitachi (GEH) will work together to improve and accelerate OSGE’s program of the BWRX-300 deployment. The Teaming Agreement between the four companies and two bilateral agreements have been signed in Warsaw, witnessed by the Honourable Mary Ng – Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada and H.E. Catherine Godin – Ambassador of Canada to the Republic of Poland.
OSGE works to deploy small modular reactors (SMRs) in Poland based on the BWRX-300 technology of the U.S. company GE Hitachi. While the first BWRX-300 will be built in Canada, the experience gathered during this reference project is of key importance for Polish SMR developer.
The parties to the teaming agreement are OSGE and companies involved in the BWRX-300 project in Canada: AECON – responsible for the construction of the reactor; AtkinsRéalis – project engineer; GE Hitachi – designer of the technology.
Additionally, OSGE has signed two executive framework agreements with Aecon and AtkinsRéalis. These are detailed bilateral agreements for cooperation in areas relating to the construction of a BWRX-300 nuclear power plant. For OSGE, it is particularly important to benefit from the expertise of both Canadian companies developed over decades in areas where Polish construction and engineering companies do not yet have the competencies required for the deployment of nuclear power projects.
The concluded agreements and cooperation will provide OSGE with the engineering expertise and construction know-how necessary to develop and build a target model of cooperation with the prospective contractors.
OSGE plans to build a fleet of the GE Hitachi BWRX-300 SMRs in Poland with the first unit ready in the early 2030s. In May 2023, the company received a positive general opinion – a non-mandatory prelicensing instrument – from the President of the National Atomic Energy Agency (PAA) on technical aspects of the BWRX-300 technology. In December 2023, Poland’s Ministry of Climate and Environment issued decisions-in-principle for the construction of power plants based on GE Hitachi BWRX-300 at six locations.

‘‘Today, particularly in the face of the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine, like-minded countries are seeking reliable partners in our collective efforts to enhance energy security and supply chain resiliency, while taking ambitious climate action. Nuclear energy is a vital contributor to these efforts, and we are pleased to highlight these agreements which will drive the creation of good, sustainable jobs for Canadians”, said the Honourable Mary Ng – Minister of Export Promotion, International Trade and Economic Development of Canada.
OSGE
“After establishing a cooperation with OPG, our main partner from Canada, we begin the next phase of Polish-Canadian cooperation. The goal is to build an effective cooperation model and prepare OSGE for engineering and construction contracts”, said Rafał Kasprów, CEO of OSGE. “To do that most effectively, we need expertise and support from partners who have such experience. Aecon and AtkinsRéalis are responsible for the design and build of the BWRX-300 reactor for Ontario Power Generation in Canada, therefore this partnership is natural for us”.
“We’re pleased to bring our full spectrum of nuclear construction solutions to support OSGE in collaboratively planning the deployment of the next generation of nuclear technology, contributing to the supply of clean, reliable and affordable electricity in Poland,” said Thomas Clochard, Executive Vice President, Nuclear and Civil, Aecon. “Aecon is at the forefront of advancing the energy transition with nuclear power. The deployment of SMRs is playing a significant role in achieving global sustainability targets and is a key component of Aecon’s strategic growth under collaborative project delivery models.”
AtkinsRéalis
“With global electricity demand tripling by 2050, we see there being a market for 1,000 new nuclear reactors to be built,” said Joe St. Julian, President, Nuclear, AtkinsRéalis. “Alongside large reactors, SMRs will make up a portion of those new builds to provide the quantum of extra power needed. We will draw on our expertise from the ongoing successful deployment of the BWRX-300 SMR in Canada at Darlington to repeat the outcome for Poland.”
