Hitachi Group and OSGE are implementing their first projects related to the SMR fleet and strengthening strategic cooperation on the Polish and European markets
31/10/2024, 14:13Hitachi and Orlen Synthos Green Energy are developing strategic cooperation for the development of the SMR fleet in the areas of IT, engineering services and power connections. Hitachi Europe has just implemented a secure documentation repository for OSGE and is beginning work on a comprehensive application architecture for OSGE.
In February this year, the regional headquarters of the Hitachi Group – Hitachi Europe Ltd. Branch in Poland signed an agreement with Orlen Synthos Green Energy (OSGE), under which the two companies began strategic cooperation in the field of technology and services in the area of ‘nonnuclear’ solutions. Subsequently, the two companies formed several working groups that began work to support the development of the SMR project at OSGE. The scope of the working groups’ activities included IT infrastructure, IT architecture, power connections, fixed asset management and cybersecurity.
“Orlen Synthos Green Energy is a strategic customer and business partner for us. The Hitachi Group can support the SMR project in many areas, using its potential in Poland as well as global experience in the field of nuclear energy, energy transmission and IT. The project with OSGE is of key importance to the green transformation of the Polish energy sector, which is why we will support and promote it with all our strength,” said Tadeusz Woszczyński, General Manager for Poland, Austria and Central and Eastern Europe at Hitachi Europe Ltd.
OSGE is successively implementing a project to build a fleet of SMRs in Poland based on GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy BWRX-300 reactor technology. OSGE is currently conducting activities related to the licensing of this technology and environmental procedures. In December 2023, the Ministry of Climate and Environment issued decisions in principle for the implementation of the project in six locations: Włocławek, Ostrołęka, Stawy Monowskie, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków – Nowa Huta and Stalowa Wola – Tarnobrzeg. The company is working intensively on the possibilities of investing and building SMRs also in other European markets, including amongst others the Czech Republic and the United Kingdom.
“The cooperation with the Hitachi Group, which is natural when choosing the BWRX-300 technology, is a very strong point of our project to build small modular reactors. We are already benefiting from the experience and know-how developed around the world and, above all, the presence in Poland, and I am convinced that as our activities progress, the scope of cooperation between OSGE and Hitachi will only continue to grow,” said Rafał Kasprów, President of the Management Board of Orlen Synthos Green Energy.
In August this year, Hitachi Europe (HEU) completed a project to deliver secure WORM object arrays, i.e. Hitachi Content Platform (HCP). HCP matrices will serve as a secure repository for the document workflow system (DMS). HCP has a number of security features, such as the WORM data immutability mechanism or data retention. Thanks to this, OSGE’s critical project documentation will be protected against all kinds of attacks (e.g. ransomware). HCP is widely used in Poland to meet the requirements of a durable medium.
“At Hitachi, competences in the field of energy and IT are seamlessly intertwined, thanks to which we understand and can comprehensively support our clients at various stages of project development. Based on many years of experience and cooperation with leading nuclear power plant operators in Europe, the USA and Asia, our solutions are built in accordance with stringent standards and industry best practices,” said Łukasz Gola, Director of Energy Business Development in Central and Eastern Europe, coordinator of cooperation between the Hitachi Group and OSGE at Hitachi Europe Ltd.
In September this year, HEU and OSGE signed an agreement covering another initiative in the IT area, i.e. the development of application architecture for OSGE. As part of the project, HEU will prepare a system requirements report for the company implementing the SMR project, and then prepare the HLD (High-Level-Design) architecture. Experts in the field of IT architecture and applications in the field of nuclear energy from Poland and the United States will be involved in the project. As part of the project, HEU will cooperate, among others, with GlobalLogic (GL), a company from the Hitachi Group specializing in engineering services, employing over 2500 engineers in Poland. “By cooperating with the Hitachi Group in the IT area, we are sure that we get solutions proven in nuclear energy on dozens of markets on several continents. Such certainty, combined with the highest quality of the solutions and services offered, is invaluable in the nuclear energy segment, where strict standards have been in place since the beginning of the project,” said Andrzej Załuski, IT Director at Orlen Synthos Green Energy.
The parties are working intensively on further areas of cooperation, in accordance with the scope of the created working groups. The cooperation between the Hitachi Group and ORLEN Synthos Green Energy is a natural step in the development of an efficient and sustainable energy sector in Poland. Two significant players on the market with diverse experience and expertise join forces to provide customers with state-of-the-art technologies and solutions. The partnership therefore includes a focused effort on innovative projects that will shape the future of the energy sector.
