OSGE obtained six decisions-in-principle

The Polish Ministry of Climate and Environment issued six decisions-in-principle for the construction of power plants based on GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s BWRX-300 small modular reactor (SMR) at six locations. A total of 24 BWRX-300 reactors can be deployed at the sites. The applications were submitted by OSGE’s special purpose companies.
The positive decisions were issued for projects in Ostrołęka, Włocławek, Stawy Monowskie, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Kraków (Nowa Huta) and Tarnobrzeg-Stalowa Wola. The decision-in-principle is the first decision in the process of administrative permits for investments in nuclear power facilities in Poland that an investor may apply for. Obtaining it entitles OSGE to apply for a number of further administrative arrangements, such as a siting decision or construction licence.
“The decisions we have obtained are an important step towards the deep decarbonisation of the Polish economy. It is symbolic that we received them just today – with Poland’s carbon dioxide emissions reaching 928g CO2/kWh, the highest in Europe and one of the highest in the world. The decisions enable us to launch a deployment programme and build a fleet of BWRX-300 reactors in Poland to provide zero-carbon, stable energy sources for power generation, industry and heating sectors”, said Rafał Kasprów, CEO of OSGE.
The announcement by senior executives of OSGE came during today’s session of the Net Zero Nuclear Summit, taking place while COP28 is underway in Dubai. The NZN forum in Dubai is attended by e.g. Mohammed Al Hammadi – CEO and Director General of Emirates Nuclear Energy Corporation, World Nuclear Association Director General Sama Bilbao y Leon and several hundred representatives of the nuclear power industry.
Vice President of the OSGE Board of Directors Jacek Drozd thanked Mohammed Al Hammadi for the experience gained during the Barakah nuclear power plant project in the United Arab Emirates, which will support the construction of a reactors fleet in Poland in the future.
